Community Service

It is part of the mission of the School "to instill in its students the concept that education carries with it an obligation to...community" and to encourage "each students to become a compassionate and productive member of society." The School's Community Service Program is designed to give students an understanding of the importance of contributing to the larger community, to establish a life-long pattern of community activity, and to provide opportunities for service.

Most students give many hours to agencies of their choice:  to shelters, food banks, hospitals, and church or temple youth groups. Others participate in activities under the aegis of the School:  the Make-a-Wish Club sponsors two "Children's Night for Charity" a year for which nearly 60 Upper School students volunteer to supervise and organize activities--he proceeds go to the local Make-a-Wish Chapter; the Key Club has monthly projects supporting a variety of activities from writing to soldiers abroad to supporting The March of Dimes' Walk America; the Meadows Mentors tutor at-risk students at a nearby elementary school.

The community service requirement for underclassmen is eight hours per semester; for seniors, twelve per semester. Most of the students significantly exceed the requirement:  the all-time record is over 1000 hours in a year!
