At The Meadows School the health and well-being of the students are of paramount importance. Through athletic programs, students learn the importance of cultivating a healthy body and mind. The athletic curriculum emphasizes having  fun, exploration, and skill-building through various sports and physical training. Teamwork is valued, and students learn to trust and support one another.  Positive leadership is recognized and praised on and off the field. The importance of good sportsmanship is a key focus of the program. Athletes are taught to respect their sport, coaches, teammates, and opponents.

Progression of Athletics Curriculum

At the sixth grade level, the program encourages students to try all the sports offered. Students work on improving motor skills, physical fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship. At the seventh- and eighth-grade levels, many students start to specialize in particular sports of personal interest.  Here is a brief description of how teams are grouped by grade-level:

Sixth Grade:  Teams at the sixth grade level are divided evenly.  It is important for all athletes to play about the same amount of time regardless of skill level. All the students are to enjoy the sports and activities without feeling self-conscious about their skill level.

Seventh and Eighth Grade:  By the seventh grade, teams are starting to be grouped by ability level so athletes can compete with other students of the same level. The teams are labeled white and blue. NO student is ever cut from a team because the School's philosophy is that every student can make a positive contribution.

One of the end goals of the curriculum is to prepare students to have successful sporting experiences in Upper School. By exposing the students to many different sports at the Middle School level, students are better able to determine what sports/physical activities they would like to pursue upon matriculation to Upper School. Student-athletes leave the Middle School athletics program with the skills and passion necessary to meet the challenges of Upper School athletics.
