Upper School students participated in a program called "Every 15 Minutes" during assembly periods on October 16 and 17. The program "acted" out a fatal auto accident scene on the School campus that involved teenage drivers and passengers during the first assembly. One car was overturned with "TMS student victims" trapped inside. Another car, although not severely damaged, contained a TMS student "DUI driver" and "DOA passenger." Various community organizations participated in the event. Police cars/motorcycles, fire trucks, ambulances, medic helicopter transport, and a hearse were brought on campus to enact a real-life scenario. The students involved were either flown or driven to hospitals, a morgue, or a police station/jail depending on the roles they played.
During the assembly period held the day after the "accident," students held a memorial service for their friends who "died" and watched a film of the events that took place the day before. The victims, DUI driver, and some of their parents were filmed at the various locations they were taken to after the "accident." Students saw a real-life enactment of their friends in a hospital, morgue, or jail/courthouse, and parents' reaction to the news that their children were "dead." Guest speakers who have lost their own children in DUI accidents spoke about their real-life experiences.
The Every 15 Minutes program was created to educate teenagers (and others) about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Every 15 minutes someone in the United States is killed or seriously injured in an alcohol incident.
The Meadows students who participated in this program are to be commended for their fine performances.
The program was organized and funded almost entirely by TMSPA.
