The weekend of October 20, the TMS debate team traveled to Dallas for the Heart of Texas Tournament, held at The St. Marks School of Texas.
Policy results: The team of Ryan S. and Korbin C. advanced through the preliminary rounds with a 4-2 record as the 17th seed. They advanced to the octofinals by defeating a team from Jenks High School in Oklahoma in the round 32, but were eliminated by the eventual champions, Westminster from Atlanta, (considered "best team in the country"). Korbin was named the 12th speaker.
Bobby K. and Jeremy S. also went 4-2 and had two impressive wins in prelim rounds five and six to stay alive. Round five was against California Rival Notre Dame High School. The team won on topicality. In round six, they debated Marquette University High School, a top-ten team in the country. Both wins are even more impressive given the "Lose and Go Home" nature of debating in the 2-2 bracket. Bobby and Jeremy got to the double. Bobby and Jeremy have solidified their position as one of the best junior teams in the nation, reaching their bid round at the first three tournaments that they have attended.
Lincoln-Douglas results: Mike S. reinforced his reputation as one of the nation's best L-D debaters by receiving the 2nd speaker award. He also revived an old and well respected TMS strategy of climbing up from the bottom of the bracket. After some initial setbacks, Mike debated every round from round three on as a break round - lose and be eliminated from the tournament. He finished the prelims perfectly, ending up 4-2 and reaching the double octofinals before losing to St. Louis Park, MN. Sophomore Ronita M. faced adversity at her first top level national tournament, but learned a lot, had a good time, and laid a good foundation for the future.
