Matthew S. '11 took part in the Mount Charleston Hill Climb on September 1, 2007. The climb is a timed cycle race from US Highway 95 to the Lee Canyon ski area along Lee Canyon Road. It is 17 miles long, but has 5,300 feet of elevation change. This race is tougher in climbing terms than some of the stages in the Tour de France. Matthew entered in the junior section with six other riders, with the race comprising a total of 212 riders, the remainder being adults. The juniors began at the back of the line, with the faster and more experienced riders in front. After a tough rider when he rode solo almost all of the way, Matthew was the 24th rider to cross the finish line, having passed 188 riders and recorded a time of 1 hour 30 minutes 33 seconds. The time adjustment for the staggered start moved him up to 19th place. Matthew was the first of the juniors and in the process became the Nevada Junior Road Race Champion 2007. He beat the nearest junior by over 21 minutes. He also finished ahead of all of his team mates from Team Procyclery, all of whom are adults. What made Matthew's achievement more impressive was that he was unable to train for the event because of commitments to The Meadows School and his club soccer teams.
