This past weekend, The Meadows Debate team traveled to Dallas, TX, for the Greenhill tournament. Seniors Bobby and Jeremy were one of only sixteen teams in the nation invited to the Round Robin in Policy Debate that precedes the invitational tournament and represened one of the most prestigious and competitive fields at a tournament all year. They were very successful, debating to an 8-6 record, good enough for third place behind eventual winners Stratford Academy from Georgia and host Greenhill. Meadows was the only team to pick up both ballots against Stratford by proving that American disease surveillance was superior to efforts by the World Health Organization.
At the invitational tournament, Bobby and Jeremy continued on their path, going 5-1 and only losing to a Giant from Lexington, Mass. Bobby was named the 13th best speaker at the tournament. This combined to make us the 5th seeded team in the tournament and put us in a good place to advance to at least the quarterfinals. However, we were upset in the double octofinals by the girls from Pace Academy in Georgia, ending our tournament a little earlier than we had hoped. Overall an excellent omen for the year - we proved that we are among the elite teams in the nation and gave ourselves a loss to keep us motivated and hungry.
In Lincoln Douglas, Sophomore Nick made a major impression on his competition by going 4-2 and just missing the elimination round on tiebreakers based on speaker points. This is an exceptional showing for such a young and talented debater.
