Shan R. '18 won second place nationally in the 13th annual Reading Rainbow Young Writers and Illustrators Contest. He was in first grade when he wrote the story last spring. Shan's story tells of a boy who decides his mother is an alien because she can read his mind and knows what he is doing when her back is turned. As second-place winner, Shan received a plasma TV/DVD player and ten books and ten DVDs. The Meadows School and his community library also received a set of books and a set of DVDs. Shan presented The Meadows' sets to the School during the Lower School Program on October 5. Below is his illustrated story.
I THINK MY MOM IS AN ALIEN
Last night I had a dream that my mom was an alien.
I think that at night when I go to sleep she communicates wither friends on the planet Teribushl.

My mom definitely has superpowers. She can hear me when I whisper. She can see me sneaking into the pantry for snacks with the eyes in the back of her head. Once she was even able to see a Snickers bar in my pocket when I was playing soccer.

I love to play the piano, but it is hard. It's so easy for my mom to play really hard songs on the piano even when there are difficult markings on the songs.

I really found out my mom was an alien when she started reading my mind. She knows when I've been fighting with my brothers or if I've been sneakily playing Ninetendo.
My mom knows exactly what to do to make feel better when I am sad. I love my mom, and I think she is the best mom in the universe, even though she is an alien.
