Every November for 53 years, the Las Vegas Sun has hosted the Sun Youth Forum for high school juniors and seniors at the Las Vegas Convention Center. This year over 1,000 students from over 50 schools participated. The participants were assigned to a room with about 25 students from all over Clark County and a moderator. Many of the moderators were political, community, and industry leaders from around Nevada. Both Brian Greenspun, president of the Las Vegas Sun, and Rep. Shelley Berkley, who participated in the Forum while in high school, served as moderators this year. The purpose is to have students discuss issues of the day with adults who are community leaders, who will listen to the voices and ideas of the youth. Every year The Meadows selects seven students to attend.
At the end of the day, each room selects one person to represent his/her room as the person who stood out the most with his/her ideas, advocacy, or speeches. Two years ago Ryan S. '08 was selected from his room. Last year Ashley L. '10 was selected from her room. This year Jasmine S. '11 and Justin G. '10 were selected from their groups. Both were asked to write a 500-600 word summary of their groups' discussions which were published later in the Las Vegas Sun. Justin's article, "Teens Need Guidance, Freedom to Grow," discussed his group's debate on public service, graduation requirements, and school safety. He wrote, "Teenagers are often portrayed as the ‘lost generation' of today's society... However, teenagers have a voice and want nothing more than to have their opinions heard." Jasmine described her group's discussions about teen violence and abortion as animated and, at times, heated. She ended up finding that the lack of consensus in her room exposed her to diverse opinions and perspectives. Last year Ashley was asked to participate in a group dialogue on a radio show. Summing up her experience she said, "Engaging in dialogue about the most critical issues encourages students to take an interest in the world around them."
