2024 Edinburgh Fringe Festival
This summer, the CFA Theatre Team took 17 students on an amazing trip to Scotland to take part in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is the largest arts festival in the world with over 3,000 plays taking place in August for three weeks in Edinburgh—Scotland's capital city.
Our journey began in London where we watched a show in the famed West End and paid a visit to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre where we participated in a workshop with actors from the Royal Shakespeare Company.
After that, it was off to Scotland. There, our students performed four times at the famed Venue 45 in the center of it all, right on the Royal Mile where there are still 900 year old buildings. We presented the dark, melodramatic comedy R.U.R. Rossum’s Universal Robots by Karl Capek which introduces the word 'Robot' to the world. This story centers on the creation of artificial beings revolutionizing labor and industry, but as these robots gain self-awareness, profound questions about the essence of humanity and the consequences of scientific progress emerge.
We were met with wonderful reviews and even made it onto the Fringe Recommended list on Fringe Review! The students made us so proud—not only as performers, technicians, and designers—but as ambassadors of our school, families, and country. Our department showed its absolute best there as well as back home where students, while not traveling, played instrumental roles in the creation of our show as they poured their talents into things like costume design, lights, set, and even original composition for our soundtrack. Their dedication to the program and each other is breathtaking!
We also watched over 25 performances including The Royal Military Tattoo (Princess Anne was there!), visited castles, Lake Loch Lomond, the haunted underground catacombs, the giant sculptures of the Kelpies, climbed Arthur’s Seat, and so much more! There was never a dull moment as we went on adventure after adventure and show after show witnessing theatre from all around the world. The most amazing thing was that we were not only watching it, we were part of it!
