On the weekend of September 14th, The Meadows varsity policy debate team competed at its season opener at the Greenhill School in Addison, Texas. This competition featured the 100 best debate teams in the United States. The policy debate topic for the season is whether the United States should decrease its arms sales to other countries. The Meadows team of Chloe Nguyen (’20) and Lexy Yeager (’21) finished preliminary debates with an undefeated record, including wins over Westminster and The McDonogh School. They advanced to the elimination bracket as the 4th overall seed, and finished in the ‘sweet 16.’ Chloe Nguyen also finished as the 22nd ranked individual speaker out of 200 competitors. Meadows finished ahead of regional rivals Rowland Hall, Harvard-Westlake, Notre Dame, Damien, and the Harker School. This accomplishment earned the Meadows its first bid to the prestigious Tournament of Champions, an end-of-year tournament which features the 75 highest nationally ranked policy debate teams from around the country. In order to qualify, teams must earn at least two bids through the course of the regular season. Meadows’ next opportunity to qualify will be at the CSU Long Beach tournament on the weekend of September 21.
