The Meadows provides the opportunity for Upper and Middle School students to learn and implement the democratic process through Student Government. Both the Upper and Middle School Student Councils are a collective organization of students elected by their peers to speak for their classmates and the school. The Student Council is the key liaison between the student body and the administration. The officials represent the ideal of The Meadows School on and off campus every day.

Roles and Responsibilities

Our Student Council is expected to maintain and promote positive communication and relations with the faculty and administration in representation of the student body. The Student Council representatives work closely with the Dean of Students in the Upper School and with the faculty Student Council advisor in Middle School to plan and execute weekly assemblies, dances, spirit weeks, and other extra-curricular events. In addition, in Upper School, the Student Body President is a member of the Student Congress and works with his or her board to distribute funds for club activities.

Integrity, Respect, and Responsibility

A number of years ago, students initiated a group of students and faculty to create an Upper School Honor Code Committee. Today, the Committee consists of three appointed faculty members and seven elected students tasked with helping the community understand the concept of honor, starting in advisory. The student members of the Committee discuss issues of academic integrity and student conduct. After the educational component, all students are required to sign the Honor Pledge.

There is also an Honor Committee in Middle School that includes the Chair of the Upper School Committee and three faculty members

Student Ambassadors

Student Ambassadors are a select group of students in grades 6-12 who serve as liaisons between The Meadows and the greater school community. Throughout the year, Student Ambassadors help lead prospective families on tours of the campus, guide and inform potential student shadows, and assist with various school events. The skills gained in this program serve students well long after graduation.

Passions Meet Opportunities

While The Meadows School puts an emphasis on academics, clubs play an important role in balancing the lives of students. Meadows students have the opportunity to participate in activities that help stimulate their academic development and prepare them for life beyond high school. Students, with the support of a faculty advisor, are encouraged to join or start clubs in areas of learning about which they are passionate.

A Wide Breadth

Recognizing the diversity of interests in the student body, we offer a wide variety of club opportunities for every Middle and Upper School student. Clubs range from academic (STEM Club, Creative Writing Club) to service (Key Club, Make-A-Wish) to general interest (Film Club, Board Games Club.) Many clubs have a service element or travel and participate in interscholastic competitions. For Upper School, a Club Fair is held in the beginning of the school year for students to explore their interests and see which clubs they may wish to join.

Checks and Balances

At The Meadows, Student Congress is the legislative branch of the Student Activities Program and handles funding requests for recognized clubs, maintains the Student Government Code (the rules by which Student Government operates), and responds to requests for help from students in a broad range of issues regarding student life.

Student Congress is comprised of student representatives from (Congressionally) approved clubs along with members of the Upper School’s Student Council. Permanent members are approved by the body’s members throughout the year and may request funding after a short probationary period.

Rules of Order

Student Congress follows the traditional legislative process. Bills, which allocate funds and enact laws, and resolutions, which express an opinion of the Congress, are authored by individual members of Student Congress, or by a group of members. In addition, Student Congress representatives write legislation at the request of student organizations or of individual constituents. All legislation goes before committee and then is considered by Full Congress. Throughout this process, bills are amended and extensively debated. Bills become law when they pass the Student Congress by the necessary majority and are signed by the Student Body President.
